If my memory serves me, Wolfe has posted a comparison on MLP: he had put 1215 vintage slugs instead of 1018's in a Marshallhead PU and has recorded a few samples with the two kinds of steel.

Don't know of anyone selling 1215 slugs but they're easy enough to make, all you need is the round bar stock. I'll check in with Thuyssen-Krupp and order some if they have it...

The higher the number, the more carbon in the steel, which makes it harder. Lower carbon gives a warmer tone.

1215 (HR,CF) - Fast cutting steel is considered the standard screw stock. Cutting speeds and machining characteristics are excellent.

1215 and 12L14 are very similar. I love 12L14 and I use it for several different things. The "L" is for lead and makes the steel more machinable. The ammount of lead is inconsequential and is allowed under ROHS rules.

I use 12L14 for my slugs. Similar to 1215. I have them made by a some-what local shop and they came out great. They sound very good and articulate, and although it is subjective to your specific ears, i find them warmer than other varieties I have used in the past. I started using my own several years ago and I find them to be an overall improvement.
