If the baseplate is necessary to close the magnetic circuit, what would be the point of something like this?

"Custom cut flat fiberboard humbucker frames made from .095 thick material for zero interaction with pickup or for very shallow mounting applications. A ground plane will need to be added such as shielding tape."
Can somebody brief me on the utility or such an item? I can't find a reasonable explanation, so I may know a whole lotta LESS about p'up design than I thought I knew.
