Mojo Pickup Parts » Mojotone Fiberboard Humbucker Frame 49.2mm (1.94'')

If the baseplate is necessary to close the magnetic circuit, what would be the point of something like this?

    Quote from the "description" frrame:
"Custom cut flat fiberboard humbucker frames made from .095 thick material for zero interaction with pickup or for very shallow mounting applications. A ground plane will need to be added such as shielding tape."

Can somebody brief me on the utility or such an item? I can't find a reasonable explanation, so I may know a whole lotta LESS about p'up design than I thought I knew.

How would a baseplate close the magnetic circuit? They aren't magnetic. Plus if they were, your pickup wouldn't work correctly.

These are good for when you don't want the baseplate to change your tone. Haven't you been following discussions on baseplates (nickel silver vs. brass)?

That's how Tom Anderson pickups are made:

I was hoping this baseplate was going to be made to work with the blade bobbins they sell.

I've made this thread at six o'clock this morning and obviously my brain wasn't connected with the rest of the body...

      Talking 'bout a "brain fart"...?

I think the blade bobbins are meant to be used with the humbucker plastic covers and encapsulated. These baseplates are just like the nickelsilver ones, I think they're meant to be used with standard HB bobbins.

        I'm awake now... I think...?

No, the blade bobbins don't fit in the plastic covers. They are slightly larger than regular humbucker bobbins. Because of that they also need a wider magnet. They are actually very nice looking blade bobbins, and the real blades come in black, chrome and gold. But Mojo doesn't carry those.

You can get the black blades here:

Humbucker Pickup Bobbin Blade - Guitar Parts

They work OK with regular base plates, but the two holes that mount the bobbin to the baseplate are actually where the two outer most pole pieces are on a regular baseplate. I had a brass baseplate with no holes, and drilled the four holes I needed to try the bobbins out.

The real bobbins for the closed covers look like this:
