... some sound clips from the new pickups:

Bob P PIckups Crunchy II by Bob Palmieri on SoundCloud - Create, record and share your sounds for free

Bob P Pickups Schmutzified by Bob Palmieri on SoundCloud - Create, record and share your sounds for free

I could apologize for any number of things regarding these samples, but fundamentally this represents what I've finally settled on as the best electric guitar pickups I've ever played, for me.

Sounds good, and nice playing by the way!

    Are those sidewinders?

Thanks David. Y'know, with all this talk about blues, fusion, lotsa notes, less notes, etc. I felt like showing my hand a bit in the sense that sometimes I like to play blues, sometimes I like lotsa notes, sometimes less notes, etc.

Thanks, Terry. In fact, some of this was played kindof loud...

Me too. Which is why it bugs me when people get their knickers in a twist when someone show's some virtuosity. Good players can play fast and furious, or slow and simple.

Playing slow is hard. Players with no taste also don't know how to play simple.

Glad to help. This place was a big help to me too, way back at Ampage.

Wow neck is so clear and musical. I'm super jealous!

The neck pickup is super nice! And the bridge has the right amount of bite and thinness. Some guitarist use way too much low end, but that's just right.

Thanks for real, us "jazz guys" do get wrapped up in those kindof things.

Well.. not really. I just asked some questions now & then and posted some observations here & there.

However, I'll tellya what I can about the "design process" below.

Actually, a lot of the process of developing these pickups follows from my general weeneeness and over-sensitivity to the tone that comes out when I'm playing. I mean, really, there are people who just play; how it sounds doesn't really affect them much. A bright, sharp sound doesn't make them pick any less notes (or slur more.) They just shrug their shoulders and play the way they play.

Me, I feel like there's a big feedback loop, with the sound that comes back at me constantly steering a lot of little decisions. And, although I'm kindof jealous of those more independent, output-oriented players I just decided that pretending that I'm any different wasn't gonna get me anywhere. In the immortal words of Popeye the Sailor Man, "I yam what I yam."

Also, the pickups are obviously one element of a very complex chain of devices. So, I started thinking about pickups not so much in terms of what they sound like ('cause we can make 'em bright, dark or whatever) but instead as interpretive devices that take the language of what we do with our hands and translate it into some form that the next interpretive device in the system responds to. For this reason, the feel & dynamic response became my guides; the sound clips I uploaded were just my first reactions to what I was hearing (as Tom & Ray Magliozzi would say, Unimpeded by the Thought Process.)

Thanks, David. Those were certainly priorities in both cases.

You know, they sound very similar to the two humbuckers I have in one of my guitars. Yours just sound more single coil, which is to be expected. But I went for the same tones in my set.

I also agree that certain tones make me play certain ways.

Good job, Bob! Nice sounding p'ups, and the playing doesn't hurt either.

Would you be so kind to post some pictures of those? I'm curious to see how they look.

                          HTH,

The set on my guitar was made with the rejected parts from a commissioned set that went out to the guy who's building the customer's guitar. So, mine are pretty funky & un-slick, but I'll take some kindof snap this weekend.

However, I like the sounds enough that I'm investigating the probability of doing a short run, and those will look much straighter.

Doesn't surprise me; I think we hear the Big Picture of this pickup thing in similar ways. Transferring those basic voices that you have going on that axe to the sidewinder format will very likely make you very happy.
