when i wound my pickup i was worried that i might go over the edges, so i made a funnel type system so that the coil was directed into the bobbin even if it was guided outside the bobbin a bit.
basically what i did was cut a hole into the middle of a piece of paper that was a little bit smaller than the largest part of the bobbin. the idea is that you can slip it on lengthways so that the paper is still on the inside of the bobbins inner lip. i did this twice, once for each side of the bobbin. then i used tape on the outside (not where the wire goes as the wire will snag the edge of the tape) to hold it in place. try your best to have minimal gaps in the inner part of the bobbin, as this could cause a snag. this isnt a big risk, but it is still possible. i then cut the paper into circles so that it wasnt too big and flapping alot. the next step is to angle the paper outwards so it is not paralell to the bobbins sides, as this achieves nothing. there are 2 ways of doing this. one is to fold a part of the paper over to minimise the circles circumference and have it lean out of the bobbin, and tape it shut. you must be careful that the fold is in the direction that it does not catch the wire in the direction it is spinning. this could make a problem with unwinding. the other method is to tape the outer edges of the paper to eachother pulling them away from the centre of the bobbin. this is what i did, it created a good surface, but with creases as the outer diameter must be folded a bit (it forms a rectangular shape in reality) to get to this shape. obviously this is to be done on the second side aswell.
when you are finished you can remove the tape and tear the paper to remove it,tearing to a corner would work well to avoid disturbing the coils,, but it shouldnt be an issue.
i dont know if it was just an unnessisary precaution, but i was worried that id be making alot of mistakes, and this is an easy way to make winding foolproof. i dont know how many people this will help, as most people here seem to have alot of knowledge and experience winding. im sure some people will get something out of it.
