Yeah - mine has the felt piece.

If you ever need parts or anything from Azonic, give a fella named Wes there a ring and let him know your a pickup winder colleague of mine. I'm sure he'll take care of you, he's a great guy to work with. I didn't pay MAP for any of my stuff. They probably put that up to give resellers some margin room. Most of those parts can be found at McMaster, also.
Thanks for that info, James! I'll give him a call.

Yes, I wish I was 20 again also, or even 40, and since all women are crazy it doesn't matter. lol You just try to find the ones who's insanity matches yours.

That was actually the case here.

Great info in this thread, thanks

On the subject of the feeder nozzle, what I was considering was a narrow slot so the wire is guided in the traverse direction but given some free movement along the length of the the bobbin.

What also works is a piece of teflon tubing.

You guys are young...I'll be 70 in a few days!

I'm just using a couple of spring loaded felt pads on the de-reeler for my ancient CoWeCo winder, and if I wind a dozen north and a dozen south coils, I can easily match them up within plus or minus 2% on DCR, and of course, the turns are exact. I try to get within plus or minus 1%. That's good enough tensioning for me.

I'm about to turn 58, so I guess that puts me in the Senior Winders class too.

I do the tensioning on my winder with a simple friction rig, although I use soft silicone rubber pads rather than felt. I can't say that the silicone is necessarily better than felt, but it seems to work fine. I've been using that rig since 2005 and haven't had to replace the pads yet. I set the drag to 25 gm with a tension gauge and recheck it now and then. It seldom varies more than a few grams over a batch of a dozen coils. Like Rick, I'm not that concerned about tension. I mostly pay attention to consistent layering with an automatic feed, and an accurate turn count. Basic stuff. That makes my coils very consistent in density, geometry, and sound.

My main concern is that the tension be reasonable and consistent for a batch of coils. I always wind in sequence: north up, south up, north up, south up, etc. so if there are any changes in tension or wire issues, I can still match coils nice and close. I realize that DCR isn't a huge issue, but what the hell, if I can match to within a couple of percentage points, why not go for it. The turns counts are exact.

I use stepper motor tensioner and i like how it works....it just needs a small stepper motor and a simple pwm supply Click image for larger version

Shh don't tell anyone but I'm going to try to sneak in a noob question here: how would a coil wound with a slightly lower tension sound compared to a coil wound with a slightly higher tension?

I normally just hold the wire with my fingers and, as an apprentice winder, mostly I'm just trying not to break the wire. I could well be winding too loosely.
