  • picklups magnet orientation

    Hello,

in a new build p-bass, I will use two Nordstrand PUs: MM style (one coil "N", other coil "S") and Big Split (in-line split HB, two strings "N" and two string "S").
The PU positions are quite close (traditional MM "sweet spot" and '50 single coil p-bass).
How you prefer to orientate (rotate) the PUs to minimize string pull and magnetic interaction? I think the best is to have the "internal" coil in the MM HB (the side near to the split PU) in opposite polarity to the split for the low A and E strings. What is your experience...is it important or not?

    Thanks
    m.

You don't have to worry about that.

Just don't adjust them too close to the strings, and they won't pull. You will hear it when they do because they notes will warble.

The magnetic polarity between the pickups doesn't matter as long as the coils are electrically in phase with the other pickup. Because humbuckers (and split humbuckers like P bass pickups) have the two coils out of phase with each other, the opposite polarity magnets puts them back in phase with each other.
It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure. — Albert Einstein
