  • Mini-humbucker - custom made needed?

    Hello,
I have ordered a Godin Empire HG guitar and it will arrive to me soon. This guitar has a single-coil pickup in neck position. Godin informed me that the dimensions of this pickup are: 2 7/8" x 1 1/8". I am sure I will experiment a little bit and change this pickup to a mini-humbucker, especially that I am more of a humbuckers fan over single coils. I would like to avoid routing of the guitar body. I don't have much knowledge about guitar electronics and would like to ask you to help me a bit. Do I need to order a mini-humbucker exactly with these dimensions: 2 7/8" x 1 1/8"? If yes, are they readily available or will I have to order it as a custom-made? Which brand would you suggest? (for a jazzy tone). Initially I was thinking about Lollar mini-humbucker, but it's dimensions are: 2 5/8" x 1 1/8" Would there be a possibility to install Lollar's?
    Thanks a lot!

The size of a Jason's Mini HB is pretty much the industry standard. I do them the same way (thats the old Gibson size and everyone use that). A custom pickup is very much possible, but not with a cover like the one in the Godin. It is however quite an easy task to use the existing Godin cover and build something to fit in there. So yes, if you want to avoid any larger modifications to your guitar you need a custom made pickup.

A new pick guard will make it possible to fit a standard size mini HB and that is IMHO possible the best option. and if you ask me, a mini HB is better for jazzy neck tones than a full size HB as those will be to muddy for my taste. A bit more "bite" with the mini.

Many thanks! So do you think that just a new pickguard will be enough to keep a standard size mini-humbucker (with ring mount) stable in the place of original godin pickup?

To clarify. Just mount the standard Mini HB like the original neck pickup, directly in the pickguard. As the Mini will be a tad smaller you will have no problems fitting the pickup in the existing hole and you just need to trace all other measurements (exept the neck pickup hols + screw holse for the pickup) from the original pickguard
