Just to add to the searchable history: the Milan book says 4250 for mini-humuckers, Firebird, and Johnny Smith. Doesn't say where he got that number. FWIW I made a Johnny smith with 4250 turns per coil for neck position of a tele and it is heavenly.

I do that too on the neck.
I wind the neck under 6k with 42 AWG.

My two cents:

I've always wound the mini HB with about 4300 turns of 42G. (The 4250 count has been listed in several publications and articles throughout the years.) Obviously for a hotter/darker sound (using the same ALNICO 5) you can go with 43G with more winds.

Also, I always wind ALL my pickups to a specific turn count rather than DC resistance. I can then shape the tone with varying TPL counts and patterns.

Well the .630" magnets aren't quite correct for Fender spec but they are about the shortest guitar mags you can get easily so they tend to get used instead of the "correct" .530". I'd be very surprised if the magnet length made an audible difference but I do think that making the bobbin taller, i.e. .340" vs .260" could make a difference.

Most guys I know use the taller bobbin height, which makes a bit brighter pickup.
On the .630 magnets, I stick a little out the back and the front.
I stock the .630s for guitar pickups like you say, I don't stock the .531s.
Anyway, when Salvarsan gets it programmed in the Pickup Coil Estimator, the height can be tweaked to whatever height you use.
I do that on Strat Specs, I use a little different specs than he has on the estimator, but it can be varied.

Just an update. This mini was the first I wound. As I said it ended up being 6.5k of 43 awg and I installed it into the neck position of my resonator. It sounds wonderful. Plenty strong, not too dark, very smooth and very balanced.

the original Mini`s were wound with 42 gauge PE & about 4500 turns + - or more to be in the 6.4k to 7k range .using a smaller wire to reach 6.5k you are actually underwinding it & less winds is lower output than a pickup with 6.5k wound with 42g

Wasn't trying to wind a vintage spec or sounding pickup, just one that sounds good.
