  • Noisless pickup question

    Hello,
Isn't it possible (after the pickup is wound) to add a wrap, and connecting start to finish of the wrap. I think it is called a closed coil, maybe grounding it. Thereby cutting excessive hum ? It seems like it would have the same effect as something similar to the suhr system, zeroing in on the cause of the problem.
I am assuming there is something I have overlooked as it doesn't seem like it would cost anywhere near enough money.

Um, no! A) That's a shorted turn and will be an eddy current output killer, and B) It's in the same polarity magnetic field as the humming single coil.

And I hate to blow my own horn, but the "Suhr" system was licensed from Illich (who got the patent) but should properly be credited to Turner...yeah, me...because I published the concept in the public domain way before Illich got the patent. Suhr, by the way, now knows this; it' made him very happy.

Unfortunately, you cannot do a closely coupled concentric hum canceling coil that lives within the same magnetic field as it interacts with the strings. You could cancel the hum...but you'd also have to cancel the string signal.

      Hello,
Thanks for the reply. I just recently saw a pickup kind of two in one using a wrap, I cannot recall the name right now. I guess they were just using it as a selling point.
I also wanted to say I have a guitar similar to an Alembic in construction, it is a Washburn Wing series. I really like the neck through using several types of wood. Some people call them Hippie guitars. To me it seems to show more character than some CNC milled by the millions guitars now.
