Changing the magnetic polarity

I have two Tele neck bobbins to rewind and I am wondering if it is possible to change the magnetic polarity using the magnets StewMac sells to charge the magnets in their pickup kits. I don't want to disassemble them and flip the magnets over, they seem to be in very good mechanical condition.

If this is not possible I will just wait until I wind the kit pickup and I assume I can charge those uncharged poles which ever way I want.

Yes the stew mac neo's will do the job, I do them all the time.

The stew macs do the job,but bigger ones do it better. I have used larger neos and reversed polarity. I have also changed polarity with the pickup mounted in the guitar with just one neo magnet.

yah the SM magnets don't give a full charge if thats what you want, if you get a bigger powerful one you can charge from one side of the pickup, its all I used to do before I got a charger, you can change the polarity while the pickup is in the guitar even....

How big does the neo need to be? I have two neos around 7mm thick with an approximate diameter of 12mm. I haven't tested changing the polarity with one, but it works with both of them. I'll try with one tonight.

I measured the neo magnets I have and the dimensions are actually 6.5mm thick with a diameter of 13mm. One of these was enough to flip the polarity of an alnico 5 magnet. I had to move the a5 close to the neo though to change polarity.

I have some neo magnets I bought off ebay I got 4 2" by 2" with a N45 rating. They were cheaper than stew mac and they work better. I put some in a vise and had them about 8" away from eachother, hardly even put the pickup through and checked them out and they were fully charged. Stew Mac says a few passes with theirs will work. I got more for less on ebay, I'd check them out.

I tried it and it worked. I stuck a magnet on each jaw of a bench vise and passed the pickup between. I put a piece of masking tape over each side of the pickup magnets because I read somewhere that the magnets are not supposed to touch. The magnetic strength seems to be about the same though I have no way of actually measuring it, the pickup would still lift the same pair of pliers that it just barely would lift before I started.

Can be? Depends on what your after, and how you treat your magnets and stablize them. Stan....You may want to invest in a gauss meter, but befor you do, know this. Many hours, days, nights will leave your memory in return for makeing sound clips with the same pickup, magnet at different gause levels.......Let the nightmare begin.
