  • Anyone get pickup related presents this year?

I was wondering if anyone else got anything useful for pickup making this year.

I got this from my wife as a joke (I think...)

FARBERWARE 3-Crock Round 1.5Qt. Oval SlowCooker, Stainless Steel - Walmart.com

I guess I´m supposed to put regular wax in one, black wax for Tele pickups in another, and beeswax in the third one

    Happy Holidays anyways,

No pickup related stuff, but I sold some.
My wife and I are beyond presents.
If we want or need something, we just go shop and buy it.
Cuts down on the stuff we don't want or need.

Well, I did. I am a hobbiest guitar builder preparing to dive into making my own pickups.
I've been lurking here for a bit but it's time to get involved. I've got a lot to learn and appreciate the info I have found here. Hopefully I will be able to add to discussions as I gain some experience, for now I will continue studying the many threads.
Winder should arrive any day, meter ready to go, need to find a low budget solution for potting and I'll get busy.
            Nice to find this forum.

Got a simple Weller soldering station and one of those "extra hand" thingies with the alligator clips and magnifying glass. With some amazon gift cards I bought some 43 awg wire and other guitar-related paraphernalia. When the wire comes in the mail, I have plans for two sets of humbuckers (two necks, two bridges) that will get tried out in an electric I'm building.

although I prefer Laphroaig Quarter Cask, Glenmorangie is a pretty good gift.....

Quaterstaff, I found this wax warmer on Ebay for $20.00 it was supposed to be used for beauty stuff but I had seen someone here do this before so I decided to try it I set it to 150 degrees Fahrenheit and let the pups soak up for 10 to 15 minutes, works like a charm. maybe one of these days I'll get a vacuum pump and make it so I can really soak the windings full tilt...vacuum potting like the big companies do

I got a package of parts delivered to the wrong address via UPS. They apparently won't do anything because it says delivered.

A Paraffin bath has been my wax pot since I started. You can get them for $20 all day and they will hold more than the single wax warmer above so you can do more than 1 pickup at a time.

You might want to put the wax in the main pot like I did, using the extra pot with the wax didn't work very well. I also added glass beads to the bottom to keep the pup legs off the metal bottom so not to overheat the pup. This setup works great. I have a thermometer that I drop in and set it at 150 F and it works just like it should. I cant remember who on the net was the first one that did this, I just copied them.

                          Cheers

I'm new to winding my own pups, i built a winder 5 to 6 months ago and practiced with fishing line attempting to get my technique down. This past xmas my wife got me all set up with everything i need to wind" i picked everything out and actually ordered everything" but it's from her. I wound my first pickup based off of my '69 Abby. first time out i wound 3 of them with all matching dc resistance right at 5.8 actually they were all 5.7 plus. So far i haven't broken any wire or had to rip any pickups apart from messing up but like i said i have only wound 3 so far, well i did a rewind as my first official one which wound up being at 5.5. Looking forward to reading and learning from all the experts here. Thx guys, there seems to be so much info here. Have a great day

I'm trying to figure out a good sturdy single pickup winder build for the fun and to fix an old Ike destroyed humbucker that I want to rebuild. I have always wanted to try to build some pickups the way I want them but never ventured into the realm of pickup making... Since I like the SD JB model pickups that will be the model I want to build first after fixing the damaged pup. This should be fun.

I have been looking at sowing machine motors with a voltage control to make the winder. I have seen a bunch of different builds on Youtube and like some of the different ways guys get creative doing these builds. Here is one below,
