steven kersting (SK) you built me a melodymaker protégé pup way back in the 2000 era yrs.
it had alnico polepieces, uncased, non-staggered alnico poles, and I rigidly mounted it as the bridge pup in a setneck tele build.
the pup was skewed on its lateral purposed on centershotting strings overhead of their polepiece aperture.
I need pups for my lespaul. I bought it seventyfive this year. it's 1980 korea factory goldtop soapbars (p90 right?).
steve kersting can you make staggered alnico polepieces for these soapbars?
the korea factory pups signature has too much bite, cutting through the mix with midrange. it gets incredibly nasty if the amp's ecc83's are overdriven stage cascaded.
I have not inspected these pups but presume they are alnico pups based upon the dummy polepiece strength.
I recall shaving an soapbar's peripheral edgings long ago to permit fit into an O'Hagan nightwatch bridge cavity.
there's a basement alnico bar serving as a community magnet to which dummy polepieces are coupled to it via intermediary ferrous keeper bar threaded six holes
I have a hard time accepting this "coupling" technique compared to an individual dedicated alnico polepiece positioned and dedicated for a particular string.
so what I did to assure optimal magnetic coupling of dummy poles to alnico substrate, I epoxied the keeper, magnet, to the bobbin underside. I also added butyl (black sticky gooeey stuff on speakers) to the threaded polepiece threadings.
the butyl is lifetime sticky, so the polepiece threading doesn't move ever (solid).
the Honolulu guitar stores mgrs told me this lespaul is authentic being the frets are hidden over by neck rail bindings, the output jack substrate is square footprint, the truss cover is inverted (appears liberty bell). the only anomaly is the tuneomatic which has its studs exposed as slotted for screw driver configuration (genuine lespaul uses thumbwheel on skinny 8x32 stud anchored into lumber directly).
I checked ebay soapbars and it appears there's been significant challenges from the oriental competitors, claiming performance equaling the ranks. but I do not see alnico polepieces for soapbars.
Steve please respond, thanks (I still have the shipping carton of yours)
