Fun read if you wanted to know what Holmes was up to and how he got there.

Another article about Tom that appeared in Vintage Guitar many years ago was a very good read. I'll have to check to see if I kept that issue(s). As I recall, it was a two part interview published in the mid-90s. It was way back when VG was still in the big "Newspaper Format" style.

I found the whole issue to be fascinating. Here is a link to the referenced April 2008 Spanish Castle Magic issue which reviews 6 'Bursts and a handful of PAF pickups...

The VG articles I mentioned earlier in this thread were published in June 1994 & July 1994. It was a 2-part interview. The interviewer was David Hussong and touched on Tom's guitar building, relationship with Gibson & Hamer, some of the machinery/tooling he developed & built, and a little about his pickups. Basic info, but interesting. He is a man with great talent and passion.

How strange. With the proliferation of aftermarket pickup shops, you'd think anyone with half a decent reputation wouldn't want to ruin a good line of income.

I don't think that he planned it that way but just got in over his head financially and it was one way out.
I know someone (not a pickup maker) who was in that situation 15+ years ago but was able to recover from it and now runs a highly-respected business.

I was impressed with the magnet supplier (Arnold Engineering) mentioned in the article. Their alnico rod magnets are a whopping $2.60 each! I have to assume there is a significantly noticeable difference.

I remember that time verry well an I was wondering what was so Special about his pickups because of all the Forum rave. He was pretty good at Marketing with Video Clips and stuff in Les Paul Forums. I had a good laugh this week reading that he was posting under the Name KRASH in a Les Paul Forum and made People believe that he is SLASH from G&R. He also told People he was using old Plain Enamel from the 50ties for his pickups. In the end I got some of his Humbuckers for repair and they turned out to be Stewmac Kits.
