I just acquired a 73 black beauty that has un potted pickups. I thought that I would be making new ones to put in place of these low output PAF's. I was suprised that when I plugged into the amp it still had the attack of my "hotter" stuff I was used to. I noticed a real nice kind of unruliness and clarity from these that I was missing from other 14k DC "Wolfgang" pickup I was using. I am trying to figure how to use these at a gig able volume without the squeel. It's not bad if I find the sweet spot in volume. I never guessed that un potted 7.4k pickup was gonna give me this!

I second the short potting time, and NOT under vacuum. Also, position relative to the amp makes a difference with regard to squeal. If you're using a half-stack, try putting the head you're using on top of at least one other head ... maybe two. The extra elevation and where you stand in relation to that can help you control the squeal. Sometimes though, it's too much and potting may be the only resolution.
And yes, lower resistance winds like this and up into the 8.2-8.4k range would surprise a lot of folks for this application.
