  • Humbucker Bobbin Mounting Chuck?

Has anyone tried mounting humbucker bobbins to their winder by having pins with barbs notched in them that would then pass through the baseplate mounting screw holes on the bobbin? I think this is how Seymour does it. It would make for speedy mounting and removal of the bobbin but it seems like there would be a real risk of the bobbin flying off but maybe not. Has anyone tried this?

Works perfect, no barbs needed, just a nice snug fit and rough it up with coarse sandpaper, never had a bobbin fly off but never tried over 750rpm either. Aluminum rod or tube rounded on the end works perfectly. Rewinds need a little tape or something to fit the holes when screws have already been in there.

Thanks Sam. I wind at 1200 RPM and have been using a flipped humbucker bobbin with a couple of slugs inserted half way and with a pop rivet collar (rod removed) in the back of it as a center for the lathe tail stock to ride in. I put this between the tail stock and the bobbin being wound so there is no chance of it flying off. I just want to make sure it stays in place at 1200 RPM. Maybe I'll wind with a hockey mask until I'm sure it's stable at 1200 RPM with just a press fit holding it on.

        Jon,

would you have images of what you're describing? I'd like to see it.

Here is the tooling for mine. I had two sets made. One set for the screw bobbin and another set for the slug bobbin. I'm looking to make another set myself in the 53mm spacing because my current set is only for 50mm spacing.

To switch them, i just loosen the 2 screws with a allen wrench and it slides off of the spindle.

          Nice looking winder Kevin.

Here are some pics of what I was talking about. I use this with arrangement with my mini wood lathe winder.

Yeah the cream bobbin takes the pressure from the tail stock and the slugs lock it into the adjacent bobbin.

Nightwinder PM or email me I have a question for you. I think your mailbox may be full.

Thanks for posting the Seth Lover winder shot Dave. I was going to do a similar sandwich arrangement for my Leesona 102 but that is not how Seymour does it. In a way Seth's winder is more evidence that production PAF's were machine wound since I don't think you are going to get any top side bobbin warping when the bobbin is sandwiched between two plates like it is on Seth's hand winder.

Yeah Tom Holmes does the same thing, the bobbin mounts on some pins and another plate screws on over that, I do that on my strat pickups but not my bucker bobbins. On my bucker bobbins I use a bucker bobbin like you but have pins glued into it that go into my face plate, then tailstock holds it together, works for me....

You can still get top side warping depending on your tension and travel. The sandwich helps though.
