An old, but newly revisited thread about the siper distortions:
      http://music-electronics-forum.com/s...ead.php?t=5351
from when I did a rewind job on one. So the 14 K somehting DC recistance from Ruel is a bit to high for the vintage versions. And you will have to find a really thick ceramic magnet to be able to make an accurate clone. Also read about the steel shim surounding the magnets from the mentioned thread.

        Plan of attack...

Many thanks to all on your input. I had read that other thread first, so as to not ask redundant questions. I think at this stage, I will simply use regular filister 5-40 screws, as I have a lot of them, and I can't see the hex head making an enormous difference. GJ has big cermic magnets, and I'll work out the shim thing too, although all I can really see that doing is evening out the magnetic field a bit. Hopefully I can hit on soemthing useful. if I do, i'll share my findings. Thanks

First I think that an Allen headless type screw would mean a thicker screw altogether. That would probably mean a higher magnetic field (compare the screw side vs. the slug side on an ordinary HB). If you are considering ordering from GJ you might as well throw in a set (or more correct two sets) of these:

I personally think the shims have nothing to do with the sound. I just think that they originally couldn’t find big enough magnets and the shims were there just so that there wouldn’t be any air gaps…and then they reversed that engineering and enter the Air Norton.

            Soo I bought a Super D...

...on e-bay. It measures 14K, has a shim on one side of the magnet, and sport polepieces a bit smaller than the one GJ carries, about the size of a #8 screw, and it is a silver set screw, probably plated, but possibly stainless.

The bobbins are special made for the screw, which is probably obvious but it was somthing I wondered about. It doesn't sound great clean, but it really wallops the amp on dirty.....;-)

Thanks for all the opinions and info

You'll need to contact Pat with your tax info and such. I generally deal via phone, as it works best for him.

I'm quite sure they are just standard off the shelf set screws. I've bought replacements in the past from a hardware store and they looked the same. I have a box full of DiMarzio clones and all the screws are pretty much the same, except some are black, which is also common for set screws.

                    David,
Wouldn't the alloy and annealing be important? Plating would be nice too.

Hardware store set screws can come from just about any source with no way to trace materials. Plating is going to be zinc which wouldn't be my preference and rarely holds up against sweat and time.

Yes, it would be. I don't think they used anything special, but I could be wrong.

On the old DiMarzios I have, the screws have shown signs of getting a bit tarnished or rusty.

The ones Carvin use seem to be black powder coated or something... at least on the carvin guitar I used to have.
