I've seen alnico8 humbuckers some where I can't remember. What do you suppose they'd sound like (crap doesn't count), maybe some where between A-5 and ceramic? A little from column A and a little from column C with all or none of the positive qualities of each?

I'm curious about it for bass pickups. Maybe Dave S has played with it?

I haven't used any alnico at all, except for an alnico 5 bar magnet I had. I tried that in one of my pickups one day to see what it would sound like, and it was obviously darker sounding. My initial reaction was that I didn't care for the tone, so I haven't pursued any designs with alnico for bass.
I'm starting to experiment with winding pickups with particular tonalities, so it's on my list of things to mess with at some point.
Alnico 8 could be interesting. I'd imagine it would be like a cross between ceramic and alnico. It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure. — Albert Einstein

Alnico VIII is great. Think of the tone as the best qualites of A2, A5, and Ceramic put together with really no bad characteristics except price. They are probably the most expensive of all humbucker mags.
A8 has thick mids and smooth top end like the A2, and has the power and cut of both A5 and C5....and yet it sounds different than all of them.
Here is some info on the A8's gauss levels (tooks three samples from different areas of a brick)
Before Charging (as they came from vendor) Full Charge
1. 1171 North 1253 South 1370 North 1494 South
2. 1216 North 1336 South 1469 North 1407 South
3. 1297 North 1288 South 1355 North 1368 South
Seymour just added the "Alternate 8" to his product line which has an A8. I also have a model that will be coming out that uses A8.
Try it out,...i think that you'll be please with the results.

Wymore guitars sells different mags and is probably your best bet if you're only buying a few. Allstar and the others have a minimum.
I have purchased other items from wymore and they have great customer service
