    Right, that's why I'm wondering about it. I've made quite a few low z pickups using 42 and 43 AWG, so now I'm curious to try something heavier.

      It is. Leo Fender got a patent on that and used it on G&L pickups, and it's also used on Dimarzio Virtual Vintage pickups for the top coil. Also if you think about the old Fender Jaguar pickups, they had the same thing with that metal claw. Lace does some similar things too.
