Beveling Alnico rods

What's a good tool for this? A file will work but for obvious reasons, the file gets torn up more than the Alnico.

In these small sizes, search jewelry tool shops rather than industrial ones.

Chuck in a cordless drill, then with a bench grind running spin the drill, opposite direction of bench grinding wheel works best. Harbor Freight bench grinder, 4" if you don't have one. It bevels them quickly so be careful..

Dremel clamped in a vise running , with the alnico chucked in a drill as always worked great .

Bench grinder with a green wheel formulated for harder materials. Most grinder wheels are a bit soft and will wear down quickly. Harbor freight has cheap-ass diamond disks for your Dremel sold in packs of 5. Don't breath the dust, cobalt is a known carcinogen.

Fender spun the magnet against a rotating grinding wheel. But only Leo did that. In '65 and later, they were not beveled at all. They were tumbled in a vibrating tumbler that smoothed out the edges.

Search for "vibratory deburring" and also the many media that are available from ceramic cones to hazelnut shells. Harbor Freight sells a smaller unit that's popular with shotgun shell reloading enthusiast.

Diamond wheel.

Not at grinding speed (yielding sparks), as the iron in the alnico will dissolve the diamonds (which are carbon), damaging the diamond wheel.

A standard green or white bench grinder wheel will work, as will CBN.
