  • New Here and TPL Chart

    Hi,

Newly registered but have been leaching knowledge for 4-5 years from you guys and have been taking notes. Long time guitar amp builder and have been studying the science and nuances of pickups for quite some time, I just thought I only have time for one rabbit hole at a time. Ran across a great deal on a new machine and tons of parts for too good to pass up, so figured to actually start winding instead of thinking about winding was in order. Thanks to many of you I went into this with a better understanding than learning the hard way, although I still have much to learn.

    1. The bundle I bought came with a hand held tensioner. The first thing I did was to build a cradle that I could mount the tensioner and easily remove. It's basically a cradle mounted to 2 high quality bearing drawer slides (like for kitchen drawers) This allows me to easily hand guide the tensioner from left to right and not have inconsistent tension from my hand moving forward and backward.

    2. I know it's not exact, but it's consistent. When I am adjusting tension, I basically use small fishing weights that I have bonded together to a specific amount of grams. I then fix the magnet wire to the weights and with the tensioner point down, adjust the tension hold the lighter weight and but allow the wire to feed for the heavier weight. This allows be to make sure I am within 4 grams of my desired tension.

    3. I created a TPL Chart. While I did it for the Mojo winder, it should be applicable for any winder that has RPM's. I highlighted the speed/turn combinations that were whole numbers. I then use a metronome app that I downloaded and set it to 60BPM. If you cant find a whole number to match you target. you can get creative. If you wanted a 1.5 sec travers, set you metronome for 40bpm

I have bee fortunate to not have had any breakages or any duds in my first 20 pickups.

Thanks, to all. Let me know if the file doesn't work
