  • The basics and beyond

I’ve been playing around with winding my own pickups for a couple years now. I’ve made several humbucker and single coil pickups to the specs they give you on stewmac. Now I want to start experimenting and coming up with things that are original. Rather than trying random things I would like to get an idea of how all the parts of a pickup work together.

Here is the way I understand it

Taller bobbins make for a brighter tone

Shorter bobbins make for warmer tone

Stronger magnets make for a brighter tone and more volume but less sustain.

Heavy wire gauge makes for brighter tone with less output.

Light wire gauge makes for more midrange and more output.

More wraps makes more output, more midrange, and a distorted tone.

Am I on the right track so far?

What does somebody need to do to maximize bass tone?

I’ve heard that some people are starting to use neo mags. How do they compare to Anico, and ceramic for tone?

What type of things change the grittiness of the pickup? What I mean is some pickups always sound smooth while others always sound dirty. What causes this?

Are there ways to maximize sustain other than using less powerful magnets?

Sorry for all the Noobish questions. I know that I really just need to get a good book on the subject. Can somebody recommend anything? It’s easy to find very basic information but difficult to find in depth info. Any help you can give would be great.
