  • HiLoTron innards pics

For those unfamiliar with the HiLoTron it is a single coil or half of a filtertron toaster. They range from 3.5 to 5 kilohms DCR usually. The pics are from my crummy celphone cam but the design is interesting. The frame under the cover is steel or iron I believe. The big hunk of alnico is unusual in it's size and position. It sits beside the coil which on this one is wound to about 4.6 dcr. It has an interesting tone with a huge midrange and bottom end but little top end. Some folks swear by them and a lot of Gretsch hollowbodies come equipped with them.

That's pretty cool! So basically it's one bobbin of a humbucker, screw side, and then they put the magnet where the slug bobbin would have gone and made an L-bracket to link the magnet and the screws. Cool!

Mondo, Is it possible to give bobbin and magnet dimensions?
The baseplate looks narrower than a regular humbucker.
Thanks a lot for going to the trouble to post the pictures.

        Here are the dimensions:
        Bobbin is plastic and measures:
        2 -7/16" Long
        1/2" Wide
1/4" Tall coil height between bobbin edges inside dimension
Magnet is Alnico ??? and measures:
        2-1/4" Long
1/4" Tall (same as coil height)
        1/2" Wide
        Baseplate is brass and measures:
        2-11/16" Long
        1-1/4" Wide
Pole pieces are spaced 3/8" apart

I'm pretty sure this is wound with AWG44 poly. I will find out when I peel off a few hundred turns to help brighten it up.

No Bill, I was trying to make a Dennis Miller style "reference" joke.

Sorry Brad, my bad. Hey that rymes. I love archery, not just the hunting aspect of it. I used to shoot competition. I don't know if I can hit a cricket at 50 yards, but I can hit a bottle cap 2 out of 3 shots at 30yds.

I think Brad had a bit of the Deliverance analogy going in his comment to Mondo.
I used to Terrorize the Deer pretty good with the Archery, Black Powder and Modern Guns. I still chase them a bit. Anymore I feed them in the Yard Mostly!

Ah! Black powder, flint lock, specifically is in second place after archery when it comes to my weapons passions. OK I won't hijack this thread any further.
