  • Just getting started, what size pickups are best?

I am just getting started winding and want to buy some Humbucker, Stratocaster, Telecaster and P90 bobbins, plates, etc. My question is, what is the most common size for the bobbins for the various pickups? I am thinking of starting with all 50mm bobbins or, F spacing. I figure that if I can get a few units under my belt, I can special order more specific sized bobbins according to customer's (hopefully!!) requests.

Any suggestions are welcome and thanks so much for your time.

    Hi Lindsey:
Depending on the guitar your winding for, Determines what is standard for that type of guitar.
50mm will be fine for gibson type guitars.
Fender type guitars are more F spaced.
Here are some parts to look at to get ideas.

STEWMAC.COM : Guitar Electronics, Pickups, Pots, Switches, Caps, Shielding and Parts at
Kits are the best way to get started.
Mojo and Stewmac both have kits.
    Just pick the pickup type.
Good Luck, and Welcome to the Forum.

Thanks so much for the information Terry. I am exploring all vendors and options. I like the idea of kits but I also want to experiment a bit. Might start with 4 or 5 kits and then jump off from there.

      Thanks again.

I buy loose parts from Mojo, haven't tried their kits.
I used the StewMac Bucker Kits.
They are really good, but a little pricey.
If you need wire, I like Remington.
