  • Coil spliting without volume drop

    Hi guys, how youall goen?

The other day I took a tour of the Maton guitar factory here in Melbourne and I got to talking to the guy who does all the tech development, anyway, he says that he can split a humbucker coil with no volume drop off and no battery or preamp required, and of course he dangled the carrot but wouldn't give me a taste, there's a name for blokes like that.

Now my electronics skills are a little rusty not to mention limited, but if you halve the coil capacity you halve the voltage produced by the string movement thus lowering the volume, may be it's done with capacitors or resistors or with mirrors!!!!!! the more I think about it the more it's doing my head in LOL, anyway I thought it may be a good topic for discussion.

    regards to all,

    Walt

He could do that easily by limiting the humbucker's volume.
For instance, have a resistor in series between the pickup and the volume pot; with a DPDT switch, simultaneously split the coil and shunt the resistor.
With a large enough resistor, you could even have the volume INCREASE with coil split.
      Sneaky bloke.

        That would be cheating

          Maybe.
Did he say an unfettered humbucker coil, or did you just assume it?
Maybe there was an (intentional) difference between what he said and what you thought he meant.

He could meet the "letter of the law" of his claim just by using the volume control.
Play HB with volume at 5; engage coil tap and roll volume to 10; no volume drop.
You've got to watch those sneaky blokes. They're sneaky.

FWIW, I have seen Fender wiring diagrams where they balance a HB and SC with a resistor.

What you do is make a tapped coil for the one that's going to be a single coil. So when its a humbucker you are using part of that coil, along with the other coil. When thou switch into single coil mode you use the full coil.
It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure. — Albert Einstein
