  • I couldn't tell a lot of differences on the TPL's on these even though it was quite a range. Capacitance didn't change that much.
Funny, nobody much on the forum during the day but what a bunch of night owls tonight. I'm off to bed.

How many guitars do you need? Just one more.

This is all strictly IMO, and your mileage may vary!!!
I normally use the 1018 screws, but liked the 1022s I bought once from mojo.
The 1010 slugs, seem to have a rounder sound than the 1018s, I usually use the 1018 with slugs also.
The stamped keeper to many seems to be a weak link.
You can pay up to whatever for a machined keeper.
If you are going for real bright, the base plate used can make quite a difference.
I use standard magnets, but the shorter magnets leave more room for hookup, especially if your using a 4 wire cable.
On magnets I usually use A2, A8s, and for special purposes use ceramic 5 & 8.
I love A5 Rod magnets, but never seem to care for the tone of A5 Bars W/Buckers, that's strictly IMO.

Is there no noticeable difference in hum at different switch positions? I'd think there would be.

          • I just received an email from Larry at Remington Industries.
The 500lbs of Elektrisola Red 42 SPN just arrived.
Later it will be listed on their website, and also listed on their Ebay store.
I am buying a 5 inch roll that weighs 6.55 lbs.
I submitted the winder Wish list to Larry.
I also have him looking for a couple of lbs of the 38ga, so I can experiment on the hum canceler.

** Remington also Has some 42 HFV on order, but not sure when it will be in stock.
They are in early stage development of a small winder , and will keep our winder wish list in Mind!
Also going to stock some winding supplies, like tape and hookup wire.
Hopefully all will be competitively priced to save P/U winders money! The bottom line goal!

Doesn't seem to be. I went to the patent but couldn't access the images. Sounds like he has it wired to the output jack, same thing really but are there some trim pots n such as well?

Anything from 36 to 39 should do the job T, I looked there the other day and he had some 37 if I recall.

I bought a 6.55 lb roll of the new 42 SPN Red.
I bought a 1 lb roll of 38 gauge SPN.
                  It should ship tomorrow.

                    Thanks Terry.
I broke down and gave my father a call. He gave me some good information but he suggested I pack up samples of all of the metal parts I use along with a first year Gibson patent # pickup and he's going to analyze their properties and then I'll have some more answers.
He's a retired aerospace engineer so I have almost no idea what he's saying once he gets on a roll trying to describe the composition and sonic effects of different alloys.

Patent US7259318 - Magnetic pickup device for a stringed musical instrument with large free ... - Google Patents

Sounds like he has it wired to the output jack, same thing really
Nah, it's wired in series with the pickup. The schematic shows it between the pickup and ground, but it doesn't have to be.
He suggests the "noise picking coil" be potted for microphonics and shielded with foil.
The given schematic wouldn't work for, say, an old DeArmond pickup- where the coil start, backplate, shell, and lead wire shield are all tied together.

but are there some trim pots n such as well?
He winds the "noise picking coil" to detect more noise than the "signal picking coil"- then loads it with a trimpot to calibrate its output level.

He also has an RC circuit with trimpot to "control the frequency range" of the noise signal created by the coil.
I don't see why this is needed- isn't the noise in question 1x or 2x line frequency?

BTW- Thanks to you, I'm probably going to try a "flower pot coil" in an old Harmony Patrician archtop outfitted with a DeArmond pickup.
After squeezing it through the F-holes, the hardest part will be figuring out how to mount it to the inner guitar face.

                              I don't have a clue.
I was wondering if a small coil wouldn't work?
I may try winding some around a ferrite Core.
That would give more inductance with less wire.
Why copy your deal that works, when we can try to re invent the wheel.
I don't have a way to route the circular grove, and I don't have your swimming pool route, so now what? WTF?

Yes well, once you/anyone hear/s it I don't think you/they will be too worried about such a small thing as a swimming pool rout, or just routing some kinda trench, I can dig that you wouldn't want to hack up a vintage strat or Tele or any other guitar but surely it's not a hard thing to find a cheapie to hack up, like I said, once you hear it you'll just shake your head and wonder why it's taken so long IMO. I'm off working on my new guitar build, I'll check in from time to time. I like the flower pot idea because the taper lets the coil come off easily. You could just make a smaller coil and jam it under the pots n see how it goes, that'd be easier, I should probably get to try that as well seeing as I wouldn't mind enlightening a few fellow players with the new quietness so if the small one under the pots works then why not just do it that way. Of course it would be twice as thick to get the 350ohms but should fit in there.
