I was just trying to think of a way to mount the coil without routing the body. I was thinking that if a smaller diameter wire could be used the outside diameter of the coil would be much smaller which would allow it to simply be looped around the pickups.

Picture the fine wire 350 ohm dummy coil with an OD of 20 to18 gauge wire (or there about) wrapped around the outside of the pickups tight against the tubing/height adjusters.

Such a thin coil would allow the pick guard to be dropped in place without routing the body.

Oh well, It was just an idea.
      Thanks again.
      Rob.
I have the same dilemma as you.
Would like to shrink it a bit.
It won't hurt to try different things.
May come up with something that is a good compromise.
The worse thing is, you would have to rip it out.
I do that all the time with some of my pickup ideas. lol

It's quite a bit easier for me since I can use my test Strat.
I might give it a try as soon as I get caught up.

        • The neck pickup is real close to the wood on the upper end, you might be able to squeeze a skinny coil around it.

That'll be no drama at all.

              I'd love a 59 caddy too.

Unless they've changed fairly recently, Epi Dots are made with laminated maple- same as Gibby ES335s.
And, although I've seen some poor examples, their cherry red finish is generally far sexier than that "Custom Shop Blotch Job" in the pic.

Or are you a carved spruce top kinda guy? Maybe a nice blonde L-5 into a Marshall stack... a match made in heaven....

                  • I am in the process of testing my A2s in my one and only Strat clone.
I looked it over and without modifying, and routing, there is some room in the bottom of the control cavity area.
I used a string and took a measurement, and about 13-14 inches, which might be a 4-1/2 in. sized coil.
I don't have my 38 gauge wire yet, I may get it tomorrow.
So I may try that for a hum canceler.
I have some 41 gauge SPN, that I don't use so I may try that for a test run.
The 38 Gauge would give more turns for the 330-350 ohms.

My meager understanding is that the idea is to wind enough turns to detect at least as much noise as the pickup coil- not to wind to a goal DCR.
As long as the DCR is low compared to the pickup's DCR, I think you should be OK.

I don't recall seeing this in the patent, but still suspect the #turns x area for the humbucking coil should be greater than (with the trimpot) or equal to (without a trimpot) the #turns x area for the pickup coil. I reckon it's easier to overwind & calibrate with a trimpot than to get all the measurements exactly right.

                      • I was going to use the 41 to practice with, I have lots of that, and only a little 38 ordered.
I want to make the 38 count.

                        • I had a 1/2lb roll of 36 and got 6 coils out of it. I reckon just aim for 350ohms and try it.
