  • 52mm baseplate vs 53mm baseplate

    Since they are 1mm in difference, can you use a 53mm bobbin on a 52mm baseplate or vice versa? Since there is a great variety of vendors offering one or the other I am curious. Seems like more imported plates are 52mm

    As always, thank you for the help!

    Not sure what brands of parts you're referring to.
    You could list some links to the parts.
    The confusion probably comes from the inch listing of 2-1/16 inch.
    That computes to 52.3875 mm.
    For neck pickups there is the 49.2, and 50mm dilemma.
    They are different pickups.
    If you are using nickel covers then you need to know what you are buying.

      For instance mojo sells 53mm baseplates and bobbins - Philadelphia Luthier Supply sells 52mm baseplates and 52mm bobbins. Ebay and other sources have the same sort of differences. Addiction FX also carries 52mm parts

      I'm not going to use any covers at the moment. I'm just more curious if I bought bulk 53mm bobbins from Mojo if that bobbin would align properly with a 52mm baseplate if I bought those in a bulk type manner.

        Without the parts in hand, I can't answer your question.
        Please shoot them emails and ask for precise measurements.
        Let us know what you come up with.
        Mean while, I have some 53mm bobbins in the shop, I will measure them and see what they actually are.

          Well, just converting the numbers

          53mm = 2.08 inches
          52mm = 2.05 inches

          I will email for exact measurements.

          Thanks for the help T!

            I just measured the Mojo baseplate and bobbins I have.
            They actually measure the 2-1/16", which converts to 52.3875.
            I suspect they are all the same.
            Here is a kit, and they call theirs for a bridge pickup.
            In the fine print it is 2- 1/16".
