  • counters? (just getting started..)

gathering all the parts i'll need for my winder.

i've been reading through alot of threads and heard alot of people saying just troll ebay for counters ect..

    well heres my find.

Red Lion Controls Apollo IMD1 Counter VAC VDC - eBay (item 310004024553 end time May-19-10 22:30:08 PDT)

but i dont know anything about it really. (newb) would this be a suitable counter? could i use an optical sensor to operate it? (i read that those were the most dependable) and how would i wire that up?

thanks in advance for all the help.

That counter will do the job fine but it's probably over kill for you requirements and really big.

Have a look at some of these, I bought two, they work well and they are easy to hook up. Some times they are on special, I only paid $12.00 AU

eBay Stores - counter, Frequency Meter Gauge, Count Meter items on eBay.com

And yes an optical switch is a reliable way to go and if you have a hunt around the Tools and Coil Winding Gear part of this forum you'll find all the information you need in regards to counters and sensors.

      Kindest regards to all

How is your project going? Will you post any pics of your winder?

its not quite begun yet.. i'm currently collecting all of the parts i think i'll need, i believe i've got most of them. and now i'm kinda just wondering wear to start. when i get the thing done i'll certainly post pics, and maybe a vid.

i need to get this winder coming along though because i am planning on winding some single coils for a strat i'm building.

note, i'm also using the jason lollar pickup book as a rough guide for my winder.

I was confussed about counters and sensors, I ran across these guys, they where very helpful. I just called them and explained what I needed. As far as my winder motor I'm using a hand mixer, $15. The six speed control on the handle works great.

                    thanks for the link!

i was going to use a sewing machine, but i think it might be easier for me to just get a stand up fan and pull the motor from that, then its already oriented the right way., and then i read about wiring the motor to a dimmer switch maybe..? i really have no idea what i need to be doing right now, any help as to a good starting place would be great.

I used a 9" personal fan from Wal Mart and a fan speed control from Ace Hardware($10) get the fully varible type. A dimmer switch usually works with lights. Then I used a piece of 1"x1"x4" maple, I drilled the center of the maple block and pushed it on the fan shaft. You'll need to check the balance of the block when it spins and maybe trim a little then glue to the shaft. Ace also sells collar locks, you can attach them to a dowel, they work great for limiting the wire (side to side). I also use double sided tape and rubber bands to hold the bobbin, use a fresh piece of tape with every bobbin. I spent less than $90 for everything, counter, switch, fan, ect. Good luck!

does anyone have any schematic as to how i should wire the variable switch to the fan?
in place of the high-med-low switch..

..made a call to a friend of mine who does electrician work.. got things straightened out. now i just need an optic sensor and to wire that to the counter i have. i'll make a bobbin plate soon and fix that up so its true.. should have this together soon.

                            any input on optic sensors?
