I know this isn't a bargain, but I had one laying around for doing my guitar work and I actually use it more for potting than its intended purpose. I use cheap crock pots. A dedicated pot for a desired wax blend, an adapter for the power plug into this heat blanket controller. It works great.

Similar to what you are using, I use a variac to control the voltage to my wax pot, a small cheap crock pot. I know where I need to set it to achieve the temperature I want which I just check with a thermometer before I pot. Since I vacuum pot, I can't use a probe like Copper. Variac's are a pretty reasonable price as well.
