Hey folks,
I know somewhere in the forum is a post or maybe a few posts about this issue. I just wrote out a full 2 paragraphs about this, and mistakenly erased the whole freaking thing! Good for you I guess, as I'll now shorten it considerably!
Long story short, I've seen all kinds of solutions for the touchiness of the normal channel volume control on these HR Deluxe & Deville's. I even have notes of my own from 15yrs ago on solutions eg: Change taper, change value, change value & taper, etc.
I recently discovered what already may be common knowledge which is changing the original A250k vol pot to an A100k pot seems to really do the trick and not adversely affect the operation of the amp. It makes sense if you analyze how the 'A' taper works on the first 30% rotation of an 'A' taper pot.
I didn't compare the dimed level before to after with this change other than this amp is stupid loud. Perhaps someone will experiment with raising the value of R52 that is in series with the volume pot to compensate with the pot value change. I didn't think about it until it was all back together.
I'm going to leave it at that, as I don't want to recreate the long-winded explanation I had before I mistakenly erased it!!
