finally pulled the trigger on a small tuned sub :
Partsexpress is unloading (literally, it weighs +50lb!) the driver from the massive $1500 Klipsch THX Ultra II sub
for a mere $200.
It has the specs: 25mm Xmax, 113db at 500wRMS to make it suitable for a filtered sub.
Plug it into a Linkwitz transform spreadsheet (like:Linkwitz Transform Design Program) and it should do a flat 20-25Hz in a 2ft^3 sealed box with only ~10db amplification and a decent amp. A local guy will build me a trupan box with 1.5" walls for ~$100, which I'll have painted and polished black. Bracing will be VERY stout and I'll feed it with the Yamaha P2500s (600WRMS at 8ohms) I just picked up for $169 on the ebay. Should thump well and musically. Will post build data.
