  • Source for 600v solid core hook-up wire ?

I've just spent a couple of hours searching the net for a source of 600v
solid core hook-up wire in less than 100' rolls.

Allen Amps has an interesting collection of 10' rolls but they don't
mention the voltage rating. Hoffman's is unrated or rated at 300v.
Angela Instruments don't take credit cards.

Digi-Key sells 100' rolls of General Cable Carol brand wire 600v (UL 1015)
    in 10 colours :

    18 ga (21.61$), 20 ga (19.28$), 22 ga (17.40$)

    http://dkc3.digikey.com/PDF/C062/1567.pdf

Mouser sells 100' rolls of Belden (Type MW) MIL-W-76C-PVC 1000v wire
    in 13 colours :

    20 ga (19.15$), 22 ga (22.32$)

    http://www.mouser.com/catalog/626/797.pdf

I'd like to use several colours but spending 100$+ on wire is out of the
question right now when I only need a few feet of each.

Perhaps some of us could get together and split up a few rolls ?

I was able to find short rolls of 20ga 600V at Fry's. I think it's only red, black, and white though.

      Paul,

I know you asked about solid-core, but here's a link to some 7-conductor, 7-color, 18AWG, 600V stranded wire I got recently, which was surprisingly nice:

      http://www.electronicsurplus.com/com...a210-41151.htm

Any particular reason for wanting solid-core? I've found it to be unreliable myself, but YMMV.

apex jr. has some teflon solid core if that sounds interesting:

        http://www.apexjr.com/wire.html

seems some people like solid core because it stays better. Stranded seems more "survivable" under vibration and stress to me but whatever works for you I guess (maybe thin gauge solid core is okay?).

That's my reasoning. I use 20ga solid core as often as I can. It works best when I can lay the wire out and never touch it again. If I end up re-routing a lot or having debug issues, I try to remember to replace the piece before closing the amp up. It doesn't take much wiggle to weaken it.

In a related area, I've never felt the need to hot-glue large electrolytics, but a lot of people do just that. They're probably smart to do so. I've run into a couple amps where a wire or electrolytic leg simply broke and there wasn't anything else wrong -- brown and blackface Fenders.

Thanks jaysg for the pointer to Fry's, I'd never heard of them. They seem
to have good prices. A couple of examples :

CTI SO20-100G Green 100FT 20 Gauge Solid Wire PVC Jacket/Tinned Copper
            600V 80C UL & CSA Outpost #: 1616330 $5.09

CTI SO22-25W White 25FT 20 Gauge Solid Wire PVC Jacket/Tinned Copper
            600V 80C UL & CSA Outpost #: 1615362 $2.89

They have red, white, black, green and yellow.

            And the following (300v) :

Philmore 12-2276 22 Gauge Solid hook-up Wire, Each Color 25 FT, 125 FT
Total, Black, Red, White, Green, Yellow Outpost #: 3018459 $5.99
This is .016" thk PVC 105 deg 300V nominal OD .0526"

            The url is : http://shop2.outpost.com
Search for "solid wire gauge (+ 20,22 etc)"

              Nice

This looks pretty good as well.

              Silver-plated, solid-core, Teflon covered :

              22 ga $0.11 /ft or $10.00 / 100ft all standard colors
              20 ga $0.13 /ft or $12.00 / 100ft brown-orange-yellow-green-blue-white

              Thanks.

My $.02: I use 20 gauge, 600v from McMaster Carr.

                  http://www.mcmaster.com/

Enter 744 into the search window, that is the catalog page number. It is available in 25ft & 50ft increments.

                    I'm with Steve...

                    Paul

I've been using McMaster Carr Solid Core for about 5 years and I'm very pleased with it. 600volt/85c insulation rating has worked just fine & I've had no 'vibration' stress fractures yet although that is a possibility as Dai mentioned. IMHO proper lead dress minimizes that possibility.

Since it's all I use I generally buy the 100+ foot rolls & use 18g for heaters through the power tubes & 20g for everything else to simplify things...

AFAIK the 300v wire on the Hoffman website is Alpha wire, UL1007. It's rated at 300vAC. As such it should be fine for most guitar amp applications. After all, once you've run your choke/screen dropping resistor wire to the PI dropping resistor you'll usually be well under 500vDC.
