  • Ampeg V4 cap job using non-original value multi-caps...

The original uses 2 x 40uF/70uF caps, each wired in parallel with itself (110uF), with a 100K shunt resistor....and then both multi-section caps are wired in series, for one big 55uF@900V capacitor section.

will this work as a replacement?
1 x 100uF/100uF@500V cap, and one 50uF/50uF@500V cap...one section of the 100uF in series with the paralleled 50/50 (100) for a total of 50uF@1000V. The other 100uF section would be used in series with a 22uF@500V cap (18uF/1000V) to supply the power tube screens.

If this will work, are the same 100K shunt resistors used, or are different values necessary?

    Thanks!

The total capacitance calculations seem correct. The only issue would be that you observe where the common case negatives end up between the main filters & the screen filters. The common can case negatives in common with the screen filters the way you describe it, would have to be on the 100uf cap can.

Hard to visualize in text, but I think you probably already have that worked out. Just be certain that you remove the cardboard covers on the old cap cans & glue them to the new ones to keep it safely insulated from the outside world. glen

the 100/100 and 50/50 cans are JJ's....the cans are insulated.
