CFs - to direct couple, or not?

I'm looking at the Super Twin schematic, which uses a 12AT7 as a dual cathode follower to drive the outputs. However, it's not direct-coupled to the preceding PI; plates get DC directly from the rail, but the grids are isolated with .022uF coupling caps.

Why do it this way, and not direct-coupling?
