Has anyone built their own Pick ups?

I'm interested in this. I wanted to attempt to build my own guitar, and I was interested in trying to make my own pick ups. From my understanding, they're basically just metal rods magnetized with a conductor wrapped around them to increase the magnetic field.

Also; a bit off topic from the main post, what differs from a "good" pick up and a "bad" pick up? Quality of metals, quality of conductors, and quality of magnets, right?
