you guys have any idea in what to look for while trouble shooting? please keep in mind my electronics knowledge limited. I understand the basic and can perform basics mods, bias, etc...

Under what conditions does the 5 second delay happen.
When the amp is first turned on?
When you activate the Tremelo footswitch?
There a number of caps in the speed oscillator circuit. I may be one of them.
I would check to see if the optocoupler is blinking when the problem is exhibited.
You can look right down the shrink tubing to see it blink.
The easiest thing to try would be to swap out the tube.

Hmmm.... you alluded to a switch... is it on the pot? Who makes a 50K reverse audio pot with an on-off switch?Comment

As I understand the question, the problem is with the pot or with the taper of the pot. Is the pot original to the amp? Have you tried cleaning it?
If the taper is wrong, the resistance will not get low enough fast enough in the rotation to operate smoothly. I suppose that the actual resistance value of the "bug" could also affect this.
The quick fix would be to replace both the pot and the bug.Comment
