  • Peavey Alpha Bass sounds "Alphul"

This is a real WTF experience. guy says he bought new tubes (6L6EH's) for the amp, but now it was sounding weak and distorting easily. got the scat from Peavey, figured out how to make the bias circuit adjustable, biased the tubes properly, and got a whopping 20 watts into a 4 ohm load.
For fun, or as close to fun as I can get with this thing, I subbed 4 JJ-6L6GC's in place of 4 of the EH's. The power went up (even thogh they were slightly under-biased) to 120 watts. 9 volts vs 22 volts.
    Ok, so maybe bad tube(s)?
Picked 3 pairs of the EH's and tried them in another amp with a 450 volt plate supply. Each pair worked perfectly and put out full power in the circuit I was using them in. WTF?
Anybody else out there with this kind of experience?
I can't download the pdf file for the scat, since it's 2.1 meg. Suffice it to say the amp uses 6 6L6's and appears to be working normally. also the plate voltage is about 500 volts when idling with the standby on.
Working...
