  • 1010 Steel

Looking for some 3/16" rods of 1010 steel. Couldn't seem to find any online. Also curious if anyone makes some 7/32" 1010 or 1018...

    Zhangliqun,

I had to look for a long time to find some. It's a company in Indiana or Ohio that makes ladder bolts and stuff like that. They sell galvanized 1008 -1010 nominal .188" but really it's .182". I asked someone there so send me some sample bolts which I cut up and tried out but i couldn't hear any differences. I think they sell the wire in spools of either 1000' or 1000 pounds, I can't remember.
look through some of these links:

These guys have 1018 in a few different sizes:

Order Mild Steel 1018 Round in Small Quantities at OnlineMetals.com

How much do you need? I've got a few of feet of 1018 0.1875" round.

I'd like to keep some of it, but pm me if you want a foot or two.

I've got a good source for 1018 in .187". Just looking for something slightly wider. Would look a little different but the results might be worth it.

What I'd really like is some 15mm 1018 slugs pre-made for me. I've tried making them on my own and they came out well, but the work is pretty demanding both in time and physically. Got me a case of tendinitis in the hands for my trouble.

Is this the sort of stuff that can be magnetized, or is it simply magnetically conductive for use with ceramic or other magnets?

Nice work, Mr. King. I'd been to Online Metals and somehow couldn't find any of that. (Please don't anyone hire me as a detective.) And the 5mm might be even better...

Mark, this is just steel -- can't be made into permanent magnets. It works in conjunction with permanent bar magnet (Alnico or ceramic) to bring the magnetic field up to the strings.
