  • Gretsch Pickups: Quality? Gauging Part's Quality

So I love the look of retro pickups ala Gretsch and TV Jones. However, now that I have a winder I'd rather try my own than buy TV Jones ones. Sadly, not too many people feel like selling parts to build these kinds of pickups. I was wondering if anyone had any first-hand experience with Gretsch pickups (modern ones, not vintage stuff) and if they had any idea on what was worth keeping on these and what I'd probably have to scrap. I'm guessing poles, magnet, and windings are what's gunna need changing out? But if anyone has experience with these pickups and the parts' quality I'd love to hear about it.

Also, in a more general sense. Might as well open this up to discussion, with a pickup in hand and no knowledge of where it came from, what processes do you go through to determine which parts are usuable and which are not?
