  • Wondering About the RPM's for THIS?

I was in Lowe's today and ran across this:

and was wondering if the RPM range was suitable? It is rated with a Speed control that varies between 2000-3450 RPM.

    Thanks

Depends. What are you going to use it for? I have never used a bench grinder and thought to myself "Hey, I wish I could control the speed on this thing". I'm sure there's times when you might need it (sharpening things maybe...?), but I've never needed that ability in the nearly 20 years I've been using one. Usually I'm just hogging out metal and trying to de-burr stuff. I use it as a coarse tool.

Edit: Never mind my post. I completely missed that this was in the winding gear section (I only browse the main page with everything lumped together). I'll go back to my hole now.

I think a mini wood lathe would be the Cats Ass for a winder

        I agree.

        Grinders run too fast.
It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure. — Albert Einstein

I bought one similar to this one (on sale)to make my own wheels & Faceplate for my new winder
          Benchtop Wood Lathe - 8" x 12"
& i'm tempted to buy another & convert it to a winder ,I'm sure i can rig a counter to it & it has a potentiometer that has a very wide sweep to control the speed
If my first Homemade winder ever dies this will be the basis of a new winder

I was going to get the same lathe to use as a winder. It already does 750-3200 RPM, so I doubt you would need to go slower.

I changed that plan when the CNC winder project got started here. That's what I'm going to make now.
