    I just received a populated JMP50 board from Ceriatone. The strange thing about this is he uses carbon film troughout the whole circuit. The only place he uses carbon comp is at the plate resistors on all preamp tubes. This is exactly the place where most people don't seem to use them.

      The CF/MF thing is visual too. A CF of equivalent rating to a MF will be much larger and thus will look cooler and less like the inside of a computer. When prototyping stuff I use a mix of CF and MF depending on what values I have in each. Heres a board from a current build:



      The solitary MF in there looks a bit weedy compared to the various CFs in there even though its probably superior! Using eye candy resistors and fancy caps will get the average guy salivating a bit more than if practically rated MFs and xicon polys are used. I do recall people being disappointed when some Splawn gutshots did the rounds on HCAF a few years ago as there wasn't a booteek part in sight.
