  • Picture of new 57 Deluxe vs original Deluxe

I saw this on another forum and though it might be interesting to post the link here. This is a photo showing inside the chassis of an original Deluxe and the new Fender 57 Reissue Deluxe:

would you really throw that jensen away?

    Hi, Gee

The one thing i noticed apart from the obvious differences in the age of the components was the little wheelie bin with an x through it on the jensen speaker.

The first time i noticed this was on a behringer delay pedal and i had to laugh , as though it was cheap i didn't plant to just chuck it away , even if it was a crapenger, sold it and got a beat up boss dd-3 instead and sounds much better ! anyhow i'm seeing that symbol all the time now....

Wouldn't suppose that the jenson is so bad that they need to have something indicating that you really shouldnt throw it in the junk.....

so whats it mean? don't recycle ... don't throw in bin, as if you would , though maybe someone would.... as they say modern life is rubbish

maybe they should replace the wheelie bin symbol with a sell on ebay symbol
or a trading post symbol or pehaps a porn shop symbol..... feel free to come up with a design and post it here ......

well back to the unreal world.

I was never a big fan of crimped on spade connectors in things that vibrate intensely. The bean counters have something to do with that no doubt.

is that some sort of cardboard "shield" around the input-jacks?

I wondered about that too. I assumed it must be a silver paper backed card that adds some degree of shielding. Anyone know why it is there? I sense the word band-aid will crop up.

Also are those fuses on the main board?

all I know is that the appearance of my Mission Tweedy's wiring kicks this thing's ass....and I'm sure no wiring expert!

Notice they're using a P12Q as well instead of a P12R in the original. Those new Jensens sound NOTHING like the old ones anyway...a Weber 12A100T would have been a better choice...especially since they're charging an arm and a leg anyway!

                Cardboard

That's there to help contain Jr.'s stray metal pieces.
Jr. is allowed to play in the input section through the holes, but we try to keep his toys out of the HV sections.

I just discovered this thread and the two pics side by side. I know its an old thread but it was great to see it (and to resurrect it) as I started building for the first time - built two 5e3s last summer (a TubeDepot and a Mission) and am about to build another mission - the parts arrived today! Thanks Bruce.

I must say the new Fender looks messy as all hell - I'm sure I used the same number of wires in my Mission build but its a hell of a lot less crazy looking - the Fender looks like the Birds Nest Stadium built for teh olympics - maybe its designed to discourage anyone from ever trying to mod or rep[air it!! And I bet for $700 or so I get as good a sound out of my Mission build - in fact with a weber speaker I'll get a much better sound!

Your Deluxe doesn't have to meet CE standards, Fender's does. There are very strict guidelines adopted by Europe in the past decade which have to be met. Which means there are a lot of added or changed parts compared to the original, -- such as fuses on the heater and high tension secondaries (a very smart idea, actually); larger gauge wire; 3-prong cord; standby instead of ground switch; Etc. The modern chassis very smart side-venting is also cropped out of the pic.

Also, remember the original used unbalanced heaters. They didn't run two heater wires back then, they ran one single wire. One 6.3V heater wire runs to the lamp and then to each tube, the other half of the winding, and the other side of each tube, was connected to ground. That makes for a much, much cleaner layout right there.

All in all the modern one looks messier than it actually is. Would I buy the new Fender? No, too expensive and as I build a reproduiction of my 1960, I can use the parts I want.

There is a lot of extra work in the original that you don't see. For example, back then, they shock-mounted every tube socket with grommets, then soldered on a braided ground wire to connect the socket to the chassis. No one does that anymore.

Oh, and of course, the original was lined with asbestos padding.

                      .
I did rubber shock mounts on the V1 and V2 sockets on my first tweed deluxe build and ran ground wires. Didn't bother on my next two builds.

I notice that original Deluxe pictured has a 5U4 instead of the 5Y3 rectifier. How are they different? Is it safe to swap them without modifications?

The 5U4GB will drop less voltage so the B+ will be higher and will sag less under a load compared to the 5Y3. The 5U4GB also draws 3 amps of heater current, which may be too much load for some transformers.

In addition be aware that the original Deluxe design uses a 5Y3 even though someone has installed a 5U4 in the old amp pictured.

Oh, ok… so I will find out what a 5Y3 draws too. Thanks, Diablo! It draws 2A.
