I like my Trimode but as the guitar signal is fading I can hear a raspy distortion that cuts in and out abruptly as the signal crosses the threshold of distortion. Is this the work of clipping diodes and can I take them out?

    What is a Trimode?
    Do you have a schematic?
What type of active components does it have/

~Looks from here like sounds from gating caused by misbiased active, I would first take voltage measurements of the actives, but DC blocked audio injecting at signal path points in the circuit [say like an opamp input then an output]...either/both efforst might 'clue-me'.
