Phenolic Standoff alternatives

Anybody have an alternative to using phenolic standoffs?
Mojo has em', but at $1.50ea it kinda adds up quick.

How many will you use per amplifier?

They are a kind of a specialty item by the way, they are threaded, it's not just a piece of phenolic tube cut with a hacksaw.

Nylon ones which are mass produced cost 50 cents a piece:

Another solution is to make a wooden or acrylic core which would be worlds cheaper. But the core wouldn't protrude through the fiber holes like stand offs do.
