no clue here... how can i identify a suitable transformer for an old kay 704 amp?

yeah, it does go down a bit when the amp is turned down. i just like the amp on 11 tho

hmm, weird, this thread seems to have kinda disappeared, or maybe my browser is displaying it funny or something.

when all was said and done, it was the second transistor in the preamp... dead. replaced with first ge i pulled from my junk drawer, the amp lives again and sounds absolutely great.

even better, i found a 708, which is what i have looked for for almost 40 years now. i am confident after this one i can troubleshoot and fix it.

i want to once again thank everyone who helped me sus this out. ya'll rock
