Bass Varitone

Here's a modified version of Craig Anderton's Varitone from the Electronics Projects for Musicians book. It's pretty much the same as the Gibson circuit, but the cap values are different, and it may work better for bass the way it is

The standard Gibson cap values are .001, .003, .01, .03, and .22.

The Gibson frequencies are:
Position 1--> no cut
Position 2--> -5db at 1,950 Hz
Position 3--> -12db at 1,100 Hz
Position 4--> -16db at 620 Hz
Position 5--> -18.5db at 360 Hz
Position 6--> -21db at 120 Hz

Anderton's are .01, .02, .05, .1, and .22.

In either case you may need to increase the values for bass, with the exception of the .22.

Anderton says to try and double the values. I used his values and it worked great for bass. I replaced the Baritone push button in my EB-2 with a Varitone using the existing choke.

Gibson lists a 1.5H choke. Anderton uses the primary side of an audio transformer for the choke, Mouser part 42TM-019. It's DC resistance is 600 Ohms. He lists the value as 5 to 6H.

I've used an audio transformer from Radio Shack in the past.

These are fairly easy things to make.

I guess i need:
- 6 way rotary switch
- Resistor 47K Ohm
- Caps: .01uf .02uf .05uf 1uf 22uf (these are the ones you suggest for bass?)
And what is T1?

Moreover i solder this circuit with the tone pot and the grounding?

T1 is a transformer which is being used as an inductor or choke. If you can find a 1.5 to 4 Henry choke coil, that will work. Radio shack sells chokes, but I don't know what sizes they have.

The transformer in question can be bought from Mouser electronics.

You can try those values for the caps.. they should work fine. The bigger the value, the lower the frequency. What the Varitone does is to notch out your midrange at the frequency determined by the cap.

You wire this in series with the output. So wire it between the tone and volume and the output jack, or before the volume. You see the diagram has an input and output. One side of the transformer (pad marked J) gets grounded, as seem by the ground symbol.
