My preferred setup for a turn counter (by far) is as follows:

    "RRDC2000" Retroreflective Sensor

    I got mine here: https://www.alliedelec.com/red-lion-...2000/70921488/

"CUB5B000" Red Lion Digital Panel Meter

Found mine on eBay. Just type "CUB5B000." You can get them elsewhere but eBay is usually cheaper.

Variable DC power supply. I run it at 12v.

BLUE wire from RRDC2000 goes to BOTTOM LEFT (power common) on the CUB5B000, along with the wire attached to the NEGATIVE terminal on your DC power supply.

BROWN wire from RRDC2000 goes to BOTTOM RIGHT terminal on the CUB5B000, along with the wire attached to the POSITIVE terminal on your DC power supply.

BLACK wire from RRDC2000 goes to INPUT B on the CUB5B000.

WHITE wire from the RRDC2000 is not connected to anything and can be tied off and left alone.

Then you just gotta follow the instructions and set up the CUB5B000.

You do need a lot of reflective tape. Should cover about half of the plate that you're mounting your bobbins on. But I've been using this method for a while now, and it works flawlessly. I cross-checked it with a Monarch PLT200 tachometer and both got identical readings while running the mini lathe at 2500 RPM for several minutes. It's as accurate as it gets.
