    Happy Thanksgiving

The leaves and pumpkins are orange, most of the harvest has been done.
For many of you it's Columbus day, but up here we're having turkey!
Happy Thankgiving everyone, let's do it again soon.

The more we find out about the real Columbus, the less we have to celebrate. I'll make it a point to get a turkey sandwich, wash it down with some Canadian beer and join your party that way. O Canada!

OK< instead of a dollar Keystone, I will get a large can of Labatts Blue instead. I will spend the extra 39 cents in your honor.

I hope Halloween comes soon, I have already eaten way too much chocolate - mostly Kit Kat bars.

I like Kit Kats too, but my main abuse is Snickers.
    Never met a Mars bar I didn't like! :<)

Just got a bag of Twix the other day, the snack size ones. Each individual bar wrapper was labelled Left or Right. I carefully tested the Left Twix and the Right Twix. I found they tasted very similar.

Tonight I got a bag of HArvest Kit Kat. They are robed in a white chocolate coating colored pumpkin orange.

At the asian grocery I go to, they have imported Kit Kat from the Orient. Flavors like Green Tea, and Wasabi.

Oh, I don't know (I honestly don't ) Most of what I've read makes it sound like Columbus was a well meaning explorer, but ended up as the key that opened the door to let the bad guys in. If you want to read about a real dick head look up Hernando de Soto! Conquistador sounds pretty cool until you analyze it.

The real buzz kill surrounding the whole thing was small pox! Vikings were in North America a thousand years before Columbus but never managed to establish a colony because the skraelings kept killing them. Apparently the pilgrims didn't have that problem. If you think there's some tactical advantage to wide brim hats and buckles on your shoes then you don't know what a Viking is!!! Nope. The reason pilgrims could do what Vikings couldn't was because plagues killed and disabled the native Americans in waves ahead of the European colonizers. Some experts estimate an 80% or even 90% mortality rate!

    Happy Thanksgiving

HA! That's what they all say, when they're setting out... Cortez, Pizzarro and the rest "meh, just gonna pick up some trinkets, have a little adventure in the jungle/desert/whatever" and then they wind up killing off the natives & grabbing their gold. Which they conveniently stow in ships that sink most of the time before they get back to the home port. What a racket!

One of the best Columbus stories I saw was on the mid 60's Jackie Gleason show. Jackie was gabbing with his pal Art Carney, and Art starts spinning the "what really happened" tale: "Well Chris was hangin' around the house too much and his mom was getting tired of supporting her grown-up boy. Momma Columbus says 'Why don'cha go discover 'Merica or somethin'?' " And that's how things got started.

The real gold was - agriculture. Tomatoes, potatoes, all kinds of beans & grains & whatnot from the "New World." And corn . . . . "CORN! Now we can make whisky!"

I am so sick of people slamming Columbus for his actions, THIS WAS 1491-2! GIVE IT A BREAK. there was no political correct stuff then. He was an explorer! GET OVER YOURSELF! I don't give a damn about his racial beliefs because these people stuck their necks out to GET here. Try to sit on a disease infested ship and have the pukes and the sh!ts for months at a time just for a paycheck and discovery. I couldn't do it! Admire them for what they did! Mike.

Okay okay okay already. Yes Columbus was a genius! So much so he never really understood he hadn't found some obscure eastern stretch of Asia. DOH! Where's the cinnamon? Where's the black pepper? Where's the chicken chow mein? Well at least we got some gold!

I used to have a friendly argument with the wife of a studio owner. She was from Mexican aristocracy, and claimed the Conquistadors came to bring Christianity to the heathen natives. Suuuure they did, riiiiight! I said the Conquistadors came to take the natives' gold, period. Over their dead bodies if necessary, which it often was. Best joke of the times was Cortez & company wandering aimlessly around the southwest, trying to track down El Dorado. That got 'em a lot of nothing but sore feet dinnit?

    God Bless Vespucciland...

    Leo?
It sounds like if he was here now?
He was corrupt enough to run for president?
Or at least be on the Trumpus Cabinet?
Or, be in charge of the Hurricane Maria cleanup relief, in Puerto Rico?
Since he knows the Caribbean so well!

Oh, by the way, we don't celebrate Columbus day here, thus the title of the thread.
Happy Thanksgiving everybody, we had early turkey Sat., and again tonight.
Hopefully I'll get to have it again (or at least read about it) 23 November.

jbltwin1 is just saying that Columbus was an explorer of his day. And he's right that people love to bash Columbus. Apparently if it weren't for him Europeans wouldn't have sickened and exploited the native populations Changing Columbus day to "Aboriginal American" day or whatever is sort akin to changing Christmas to "Screw Coca Cola, this is About Jesus" day. Let the native Americans have another day (along with a bunch of other stuff like fertile land and sovereignty!). All through history people have been conquered and new cultures replace the old. Languages and traditions are lost and the remaining population of the conquered are persecuted. No one living today is responsible and no one living today would do the same as what was done then. I don't owe anybody a damn thing because our respective ancestry. We all came from the same icky pond a long damn time ago. How we got to our current respective locations is mostly pre history. We should try harder to deal with what we do instead of what we did.

If Columbus set sail for Puerto Rico chances are he'd land on Saint Helena. Couldn't buy a good compass back then, and the watchman atop the mast was nearsighted and usually loaded on rum. And he'd still be looking for the curry. I think Art Carney got it closer to the truth than anybody. Queen Isabella? She didn't make much of an investment. "Here's a couple crappy ships and a half ass crew. Go find something and stop bothering us. Good luck Charlie!"

g1, indulge your family with another turkey dinner in November, why not. There's plenty of 'em to go around. Both the feathered kind and the um, other kind.

One of the things the professors during my university years stressed in their lectures is that the "great man" theory of history is mostly turds. Just like Bach, Beethoven and Brahms, Columbus is a name: if Isabella hadn't given him a fleet, then someone sometime would have crossed the Atlantic for the sake of western European progress. It seems odd that he didn't suspect he'd found a new land, but I can imagine a starving, thirsty, sun-mad explorer just might jump to the conclusion that he wanted to reach.

I don't make him the whipping boy for all of our sins, for instance the Germ Theory of disease wasn't understood in the time of the explorers and conquistadors. But on the other hand, it is amazing to me that supposedly civilized nations did (and still do) commit atrocities of world-shattering magnitude. But that's on all of us, not just a single person.

Back on topic... Happy Thanksgiving to my Canadian friends! While here in the upper Midwest the corn and beans are drying in the fields and the pumpkins are ready, harvest season hasn't really picked up yet. A few more weeks and it'll turn cool enough to gather at the homestead for some hearty eats and community. And, yeah! I personally am thankful for a sense of stability and comfort in my own little corner of the world. The other stuff - in our nation and world - I can only try to change by turning some of my blessings into charitable giving.

As mentioned in the linked video (but not the main text), Columbus was not Italian. In 1492, Italy did not exist. Common belief is that he was from Genoa. But I heard on the radio today that some researchers believe, based on analysis of his written correspondence, that he was from Castile.

And besides being a fictional character, Vito Corleone was Sicilian - not Italian.

We had our TG with my kids and grandkids Sunday.
Ham, Turkey Dressing and all the trimmings.
The best thing of all, IMO was the Chocolate Pie!
My wife and I are going to either Cracker Barrel, or Dixie Cafe tomorrow, if we can get in!

Cracker Barrel, I usually wind up buying overpriced candy bars and a bottle of Birch Beer. Necco Skybars. I usually get the catfish.

Later today we will have TG dinner here at the home. I think they made two turkeys and a ham. With fixings, and a bunch of dish-to-pass offerings. First time we didn't have our own TG dinner. Instead of hosting our kid and fiance, we are having the kid with us at the home dinner.

Your talking about Columbus like this is the guy was a deckhand on the Essex, just tryin' to make an honest living.

Christopher Columbus was... (hmm, how should I put this) - SUCH. A. CUNT.

Really, I mean, one of the true dumb assholes of history.
I get that you don't care about his racial beliefs (or any historical details of Columbus's actual life, it seems). He literally though the earth was shaped like a pear, when it was already widely known that the earth was spherical by that time. That's why he was convinced his voyage to Asia...
Look, I don't have time to get all that right now. But, this is the guy you're going to bat for? Really?
I would learn about who Christopher Columbus really was, man. The fact that we have a holiday in his honor is a fucking embarrassment and a mistake. I don't know what you think "political correctness" has to do with people realizing that almost everything they were taught in the States about Columbus was total bullshit. A complete myth. We're not talking about Columbus saying "Colored People" instead of African American here. I'm saying, let's just be honest about his life, who he was, and what he did. If people then still think this man deserves a national holiday, they better be prepared to make a good case for it.

If I have a 50% chance of guessing the right answer, I guess wrong 80% of the time.
