  • Crate GFX 212T pulsating flabby distortion

    Posting this for future reference.

A solid state Crate comes in with a pulsating, flabby distortion that almost sounded like it could have been speaker related, except it was at a steady beat. I suspected it was power related after ruling out the speaker, and sure enough one of the big power caps was wiggly. I pulled the board ( quite easy to get this board out, no pot nuts to deal with), and resoldered both pins on both caps. Put it back together and installed the chassis in the cab without even testing it. Problem solved, maybe 20 minutes from start to finish, 1 hour charge thank you.

So, what do you think was occuring here? My theory is there was enough ripple that the signal was riding on it, and maybe clipping or badly distorting at 60 Hz? I didn't bother to put it on the scope to see.
It's weird, because it WAS working fine.....

Ripple, massive sag, low B+, possibly motorboating, etc. It's a combination of bad things.
